Bio: Kelsier never intended to become captain. He really didn't. His skill lies in flying and engines, damnit, not ordering people around. Though that is kind of fun, the whole being responsible for all the lives on his ship most definitely keeps a guy up at night. Like he said, he wasn't meant to be captain, but the normal Captain had to go get himself caught in a bar-fight, be recognized and get himself hung. Fat lot of good that does. They never had a second mate in the first place, and no one trusted the first mate not to get them all killed. So what do you know, sudden he qualified for the position. Somehow they figure he won't get them all killed. But he's good at using the sandstorms, and certainly good at keeping the ship from being caught, much to the annoyance of the Royal Navy Captain pursuing them. Like any good pirate, he likes treasure, and stealing the loads of ore off the mining ships as they head towards the floating cities is like robbing sheep. They just never learn. He does feel a little bit bad, but it's not like the cities don't get their precious metal to keep themselves afloat. They just pay more for it.

Bio: Nothing about Rene's placement in the Navy ranks makes sense to one examining only the surface. Foreign born, younger by a decade than others considered young when they received the promotion, and not even human, most would consider him the last person to fit the position. It doesn't even look like he takes the role seriously, given his lax uniform standards and generally too-light demeanor. But, well, part of being unnatural are a few perks. He can get inside people's heads, know what they're thinking, what they're planning, and give it anything from a gentle nudge to a complete overhaul.
He'd swear up and down to anyone who asked that he didn't use that to get the job. And anyone who asked would believe him. Even if he said that up was down and your kidney was supposed to be in your hand.
People have speculated that he was commanded by the government of his homeland to position himself in a sensitive position to await the attack order. And maybe it's true. Or maybe he was just bored. Either way, he does his job. And he does it damn well.

Bio: Honoria isn't like most humans. She looks like them, talks like them, but she doesn't think like them. She's a little odd, made odder by the fact that a fierce and dangerous gyrfalcon eats right out of her hand. She's also the first mate to an unnatural captain. People say she's crazy. Why work willingly for one of them when even at her young age, with her lineage and her skills she could have her pick of all-human crewed ship? Why indeed. It probably has something to do with him, a man with feathered wings and an infectious smile, whose only crime was loving the daughter of a Navy Grand Captain. Her father denies involvement with his disappearance. Honoria is well aware that he is lying. It's not proper for a girl of her position to be 'involved' with one of them. He'd gone away, her mother told her. It was for the best. She never quite forgave her parents. Most would consider themselves lucky for not being outcasted. Honoria rather wishes they would. They'd broken her heart. So maybe that's why she works for Rene. Or maybe it's just because, like her, he's a little strange. Maybe he's not an insufferable prick trying to gain favors with the Grand Captain through his daughter.

Bio: The Red Dragon didn't keep Sorryll from taking the late captain's position because she was incompetent. But, well, the man didn't give her the position because she wasn't. It was no mystery why a man of his somewhat disreputable nature would want a young, spirited, nubile woman like her close at hand. He was drunkard enough to see her lack of inhibitions over her lack of self-control. Which is really truly very absent in almost all things. She lost her eye in a spat over something trivial, and all that taught her was to fight better, not less.
Her temper, like her sex drive or her greed, is a living thing, prone to going off at a moment's notice with little to no apparent rationale. And whenever any of her ruling demons arise, she has no qualms in taking her relief, whatever form it takes, in whoever happens to be around at the time.
So while as a unified force the crew was able to convince her that no really, it wasn't an insult that they didn't want her as captain, no one was willing to step up and tell her they didn't want her as first mate, either.
So she keeps the position she earned through a drunkard's libido. At least she does her job well when the impulses leave her alone.

Bio:Traditionally speaking, the Dijin don't get along well with other species. Traditionally they never leave their southern desert homeland, Viewers especially don't. Gifted with foresight and premonitions as well as the magic that flows through the clan they are rightly considered the lifeblood of the nomadic clans. In that sense, Vin is a very bad Dijin. Blind since birth, she is a Viewer with exceptional talent, and would have been destined to lead her home clan one day. But there were others, such as the current leader and some of her friends, who were Viewers too, and just as talented. She felt redundant, and useless. Then one day she had a vision of a flying ship that came from a land that lay far across the sea. So without telling anyone, she set off to find it, abandoning both her home and her people in search of an uncertain future.

Bio:All her life she's been trained for this day. The shamans of the clan predicted great things for her totem animal. Now she can finally face the trial and earn her wings that will allow her to stand as one of the Avians. Why then, does her father seem nervous? He shouldn't be concerned for her, she's one of the best in her class when it comes to stealth and has a head for the inter-faction politics and learning. Everyone says she's destined for a Mythic Totem. Everything should be fine. Of course, she does wish her mother was there to watch her ascend, but her aunt told her that she died when Aliyah was born. Though it doesn't quite feel right, when they visit her grave in the woods. She just has no idea why.

Bio: His entire life has been definted by 'not quite'. Not quite as smart as his sister, not quite as strong as his brother. Not quite as brave as either of them. Not quite as ready to face the trial, flanked on either side by two thirds of the most peculiarly bountiful birth in the faction's living memory. Not quite as fast as them. Not quite with them when things went wrong.
Not quite frightened enough to run from the thing that left his siblings cold. Not quite clever enough to do anything but attack blatantly. Not quite weak enough to die. Not quite unworthy enough to fail.
A wyvern.
Not quite the dragon his sister could have been, not quite the basilisk that might have been his brother. Not quite over it yet. Not quite sure who deserves his anger.
But most assuredly angry.

Bio: Castor is...odd. Though his totem animal is one of the birds of wisdom, he doesn't feel particularly wise. Nor does he understand why people always seem to come to him for advice. He'd much prefer that they just left him alone. Not because he doesn't care, he just doesn't feel like he's competent enough to be responsible for directing the actions of others. They don't believe him, mistaking his protests for humility. They may not blame him for his brother's death, but he does. After all, it was his advice that put him there in the first place. He is flawed, and quite useless to everyone. They may not see it, but he does.

Bio: He didn't know what he expected from the Trial. The middle of seven siblings, no one really expected much of him. And really, he's okay with that. Low expectations means there's nothing really to disappoint, even if it creates a sort of apathy. Some times he wondered why he bothered to try to be anything, since no one was asking much of him. Bitter? Maybe a little, but that would imply he cared what they thought enough to be resentful. So when he came out with a leopard instead of a mythic totem, he was okay with that too, if a little surprised. A snow leopard was a little better than the 'average' he'd come to expect. And it explained some things too; like how he much prefers his own company to anyone else's.

Bio: It probably wasn't coincidence that her totem animal was a beautiful and exotic-looking snake. Ever since she was a child, her looks have been praised and admired. But Castille wonders sometimes if that's all people see. No one asks her opinion; admirers only praise her face, and she finds herself constantly underestimated. But like the boa, whose strength lies in deception until it is too late for the prey to escape, so Castille has honed her skills in manipulation and illusions. It is easy to distract with a pretty face, secrets can be gained when the question is whispered from ruby lips. It's what she's good at, a way at striking back at those who think her incapable. Why then, does she feel dirty when she uses her talents?

Bio: The factions are not supposed to mix. Ophelia has been taught this since she was very young, yet somehow she just can't agree with it. The other factions are so interesting, especially to a self-professed scholar. They were all born on the same island, they all gave memories to the Keepers, why shouldn't they interact some? Were they really that different? But still she doesn't tell anyone that she sneaks off to watch and study the other factions, trying to work up the courage to actually approach one of them. If people knew, they'd probably shake their heads and blame her poor behavior on her lack of parents. They died when she was very young, and her adoptive parents were involved only to take care of her basic needs until she made her trial. They never offered the guidance, or love that her friends had. Maybe its' they're fault she turned out the way she did, always flouting rules in the name of exploration; understanding. It isn't done, what she's doing. Funny how little she cares.

Bio: The day of his trial is close at hand. But while others his age are excited and anxious for the day of the Trials, when they finally get to prove themselves ready to take their places in the factions, Elan is terrified. He'd never show it, he's been trained better than that, but the day fills him with a sort of uneasy dread. What if he doesn't come out with the grand totem his parents expect? What if he fails altogether? What if he can't be what they want him to be? They never discussed what would happen if he failed, though most simply do more preparation and try again the following year. Elan wonders if that might almost be better. He doesn't feel ready, he doesn't feel confident. He has terrible luck, for all that he's brilliant. His mother tells him he thinks too much, his father complains he's not aggressive enough. Would it be so bad if he failed, just this once? If he messed up, and didn't do what he was supposed to? To his parents, yes, it really would. They would not accept a failure for a son.

Bio: Christov's body has been used as a vessel to contain a demon that was destroying his hometown. But although he was sacrificed to save them, the people feared and avoided him, even as a child. And maybe rightly so. Housing such a spirit corrupted something in him, made a strange waif out of what should have been a happy and normal child. And neither could he hide what he was, for the spells containing the demon within him left red tattoos over much of his body. Every once and awhile, the demon manages to influence him that manifests in violent impulses though he always managed to direct it into inanimate objects. It wasn't all that surprising when he left home, he imagined some of the citizens were relieved. Somewhere along his travels he learned medicine, despite his unpredictable temper, and made his way into the sailing world. Where he continues to make people uncomfortable, but never once has he harmed a patient.

Bio: It's not entirely clear where Katalin came from, nor does she seem to age quite like the other members of the factions scattered about the island. For all that she appears young, she's been at the temple of the Memory keepers for as long as she can remember. Katalin has seen leaders of the factions change, and children grow, while she herself ages quite slowly. She doesn't know anything else, and though the keepers are less than caring 'parents' she is loyal to them to their core. She has become a priestess and a guardian to them, helping to direct the chieftains of the other factions that come to pass on their memories find the correct keeper and ensure that neither party comes to harm. She has long stopped wondering about her past, or why she can't remember much beyond her life before the keepers. She has a purpose and a duty, that's all that really matters

Bio: Her entire life has been in preparation for this. Every movement a practice in strength or stealthy, every word an exercise in self-control, every thought a meditation. Where others have looked tentatively over the yawning cliff that was the future, Mishavana strode confidently toward it, unwavering, unafraid. Her mother was a Seer, her father is a Healer, and it was foretold that she herself would be a great Hunter. Her destiny lies before her, waiting just for her to reach out and take it.
No one heard the last feeble whisperings of a dying woman's prophecy underneath the wailing of a newborn child. No one heard the Seer warn of the trials, the silently resentful, fraying father, or the nightmares that would jolt her out of sleep, just to slip back into the darkness and leave her wondering what had woken her, why her pulse was racing. No one heard the Seer say that the Hunter would be hunted.

Bio: Anora has always been unusually mature for her age, both physically and mentally. As such, she never had much by way of friends and little disappointment about that fact, far more interested in her studies with her elders than the games others played. Her family worried that she was throwing her youth away, too eager to face the world of adulthood, especially after her cousins went into the Trial as three, coming out with just one surviving. Others might have been frightened after spending all the time that she does with Felix, listening to the things he was allowed to tell her about it. She just developed a new texture in the levels of respect she had for the dangers of the world and her responsibilities as one of the few healthy females of the clan. That helped her pass her own Trial one year ago with little extreme trouble, though to call it easy would cheapen it.
Presently, the manner of finding her a suitable counterpart for a handfasting seems to be her family's top priority. She is of age now, after all, and healthy, stronger than most women. It is her duty to find and pass on the best genetics for the future of her people.She understands this, accepts this, is ready to face this.
Whether or not she's happy about it is another question altogether.

Bio: Everyone thought Evan was going to be a Hunter. That was simply what was done in his family. He trained for it throughout youth, convinced himself he wanted it, and struck thoughts of anything else from his mind subconsciously. Until his Trial came, and he faced the Totem that would have fit the life he was prepared for perfectly. The panther is a thing of strength and speed and ruthless precision, and that's all anyone expected him to see in it. But what stayed with him was the grace, the beauty of the creature's movements. It burrowed its way into his head and wriggled into his own limbs when that form became his own, and left him utterly confused.
He doesn't want to be a Hunter anymore, doesn't want to kill to live. But the Trial did not fill the void of what he is when they took away what he had prepared for. So while he does not Hunt, he hunts. And he waits.
For what, he could not tell you. He's just waiting.

Bio: Malia was never anybody's definition of normal, somehow lacking the interest in the community that was inherent in those around her. She would become obsessed with her own thoughts, losing herself in them for days on end, eating only when prompted forcibly by her family. While her mind stretched outward into a world beyond their island, beyond even the world it adorns, brushing against the Beyond with a chilling curiosity, it looked to those observing from outside that is was selfishness that fueled her, forcing her in.
No one was surprised when she walked out of the Trial with the crow as her Totem. They survived on the physical refuse of the world, while she thrived on the thoughts others would discard. She was content with that, and allowed herself to be sequestered away with them, coming to exist years later as an island herself. She still lives with the avians, contributes as she can, but never volunteers more than is asked of her.
Sometimes the young or the curious will come to her, hoping to glean something helpful from her musings on this world and the one after. She speaks to those who will listen, for as long as they will listen. Sometimes she even helps.

Bio: Perseus isn't quite sure what to make of either of his brothers, the living or the dead. He had always been closer to Alexander, seperated as they were by five years instead of eleven. Now he's gone. And then there's Castor. The oldest of the Denths had always been a presence in the youngest's life, there but not actively involved. He was a comfortable shape in the periphery. But after Alex died, a little bit of the comfort drained out of the shape, and all the warmth in it vanished.
They'd never been close. But they'd never been strangers.
Percy doesn't know who his broher is anymore. He sees on person, senses another, and knows somehow that the truth must be some indescernible combination of the two. And that would be fine, but trust and reliance on family shaped his upbringing. Not knowing Castor means maybe he doesn't know himself.
Unsure is not the way to enter the Trial.

Bio: The reptilian people of the island think they know what it is to know a low birth rate. They would be fools if the stone folk did not keep so much about themselves hidden away. A birth among their numbers is staggeringly rare, the most recent of which being Mason, nineteen years ago. Before him there came Katalin, but it is simply known that she is not one of them by blood though no one will speak of it. Alone in his youth and ruled by his curiosity, he tried once to peer into the world's Memory, sifting through eons for the answer. But it was meticulously hidden.
That is not to say that he did not see anything, of course. The details were lost in the vastness of it, but at the heart of things something was gathering from fragments of pieces of fractions. Something dark and maddening. He watched it briefly and felt something shift, though whether it was in his mind or the world or its Memory, he could not tell you.
Whatever it was, it was looking for something. And he was too frightened of the retribution of the Keepers to say anything.

Ship position: Intrepid mechanic
Bio: Being positioned on the Intrepid says a great deal about a person. And generally that is "We don't have a damn clue what to do with you but you're still useful. Wait here until we figure it out." Nothing about the ship, from its unnatural captain to its half-mad doctor, even approaches orthodox. Its mechanic is no exception, though if you mentioned that to him he'd be likely to punch you in the teeth.
He is, quite simply, a technological prodigy. Enough so that there were plenty of people in his youth wondering at his honesty, and even worse questioning whether or not he was entirely human. It wasn't until he allowed the entire design process of the design and creation of an early prototype of his favorite lightning weapon that he established his legitimacy in his late teens.
Being questioned and an assumed liar for that much time dampens one's perception of people in general. He detests figures of authority, absolutely refuses to let himself be controlled, and can't be said to be overly fond of the unnaturals with whom so many people tried to clump him as a child.
If he wasn't so damn good at what he did, no one would bother dealing with him.
But, well, he is. So they do.

Ship position: Intrepid Second Mate and Translator
Bio: When she was younger, Lorelei heard voices. That has, since then, not be so much of a problem. And that's the problem. No matter what anyone says to her, she remains convinced that it was the Angel of Death speaking to her, grooming her to be His herald when it is time for Him to cleanse the world of its impurity. Losing that shattered her, and her horror at her own failure to please Him was made all the worse by everyone else's relief.
She has made it her purpose in life to prove to Him that she is worthy, training and studying to turn her mind and body into the ideal weapon and messenger. There are few dialects of few languages that she does not know, and those she could likely figure out with little difficulty.
She wound up in the Navy at the end of a search for an appropriate test for herself. What better way to prove her devotion to the purification of the world than joining a force meant to track down and destroy that which threatened it? Her determination got her promoted. Her unusual beliefs kept her on the Intrepid.
